About demountable partition systems
Office layouts change more often than buildings do. Demountable partitions are modular walls in glass, solid or mixed panels that can be taken down and re-erected in a new layout, instead of being demolished.
European systems such as ABCD, HOYEZ and Maars use dry-glazed aluminum profiles that click together, with glass, laminate, plasterboard or fabric panels, and come with test reports for acoustics and fire. They install faster and cleaner than drywall, can be taken down and reused, and give a consistent, high-end finish across the floor.
Our project · InternationalAnatomy of demountable partition systems
- Aluminum frameworkFloor and ceiling channels and vertical studs that click together without wet trades.
- Interchangeable panelsGlass, laminate, plasterboard, fabric or whiteboard panels in the same module.
- Integrated doorsGlass or solid doors with frames that are part of the system.
- Services integrationCable paths, switches and outlets built into the panels.
- Acoustic infillMineral wool or acoustic barriers inside solid panels for sound insulation.
Glass offices that stay quiet.
Performance standards
Acoustic glass partitions are specified by tested numbers. Here is what the ratings mean and what makes them work in a real office.
Rw (ISO 717-1) & STC (ASTM E413)
Single-number sound insulation ratings from laboratory tests. As a guide, STC 40-45 suits private offices; boardrooms and HR rooms often target 45-50.
Lab vs. field performance
Field results are typically a few points lower than lab ratings because of flanking paths. The partition must reach the slab or meet a plenum barrier, and the door must be sealed.
Acoustic doors
The door is the weak point of any room. Drop seals, perimeter gaskets and acoustic glass keep the door close to the wall's rating.
CPSC 16 CFR 1201 / ANSI Z97.1
Safety glazing standards for glass in doors and partitions; tempered or laminated safety glass is used throughout.
Fire-rated assemblies
Where a corridor or exit requires it, fire-rated glass and frames tested to the applicable standard are used.
European test reports
Systems from ABCD, HOYEZ and Maars come with laboratory acoustic, fire and impact test reports that support specification and approval.
Code references are summarized for orientation. Final requirements are confirmed by the engineer of record and the building department for each project.
Design considerations
What our engineering team reviews with the design team before the drawings are final.
- Plan the moduleA planning grid aligned with ceilings and windows makes future changes simple.
- Think long termWhen the team grows, walls move; the same parts are reused in the new layout.
- Mix for privacyGlass where light matters, solid panels where privacy or storage matters.
- Clean installationDry installation keeps occupied floors working during fit-out.
Our project · InternationalPartition systems compared
A quick reference our engineers use with architects and owners when choosing the right system.
| Single-glazed | Double-glazed acoustic | Demountable modular | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical thickness | About 1.4-2 in. (35-50 mm) | About 3-4 in. (75-100 mm) | About 3-4 in., by system |
| Acoustic rating | Up to about Rw 39 with acoustic laminated glass | About Rw 41-51, by glass and gap | By panel type, glass or solid |
| Look | Lightest, frameless butt joints | Slim frame, two layers of glass | Modular grid, mixed panels |
| Reconfigurable | Limited | Yes, with demountable systems | Yes, designed to be moved and reused |
| Best for | Open offices, corridors, showrooms | Meeting rooms, private offices, boardrooms | Growing tenants, flexible floors |

Our project · InternationalDemountable Partition Systems: FAQ
Can demountable walls really be reused?
Yes. Panels and frames are designed to be taken apart and reinstalled in a new layout, with new parts only where the plan needs them.
Are they faster to install than drywall?
Usually yes. Panels arrive finished, so there is no taping, sanding or painting on site.
How is a demountable wall different from drywall?
It is a factory-finished system that is installed dry and can be taken apart and reused. Drywall is built and finished on site and demolished when the layout changes.
Do demountable walls meet acoustic requirements?
Yes. Systems are available with tested acoustic ratings, and solid or double-glazed modules are used where privacy matters.
