About ventilated hpl facade

Compact exterior HPL is a dense panel made of layered fibers and resins under high pressure, with a decorative, UV-resistant surface. Mounted on an aluminum substructure with a ventilated cavity behind, it forms a rainscreen that keeps the wall dry and cooler.

HPL gives the warmth of wood, stone and color at a moderate weight and cost. We select fire-rated grades and tested wall assemblies to the project's code requirements, including NFPA 285 where required. In cladding and facades we cover the full scope: design, fabrication, supply and installation, with installation carried out by licensed and insured partner crews.

How it is built

Anatomy of ventilated hpl facade

  1. Compact exterior HPLDense panels of layered fibers and thermosetting resin with a UV-resistant decorative surface on both faces.
  2. Ventilated cavityAn air gap behind the panels lets air move and moisture dry out, keeping the wall cooler in the Florida sun.
  3. Aluminum sub-framingVertical rails and adjustable brackets that set the panels in plane and isolate them from the structure.
  4. Fixed and sliding pointsEach panel has one or two fixed points and oversized holes elsewhere, so it can expand and contract with humidity and temperature.
  5. Weather barrier & insulationThe waterproof layer and insulation behind the cavity, protected from sun and rain by the panels.
  6. JointsOpen joints of about 5/16-3/8 in. (8-10 mm) for ventilation and movement.

Codes, testing & approvals

Performance standards

Cladding in South Florida is judged on fire safety, wind resistance and how its finish survives the sun. These are the standards behind our systems.

NFPA 285 · Fire propagation

Full-scale fire test for exterior wall assemblies that contain combustible components, typically required on buildings over 40 ft. The whole assembly is tested, not just the panel.

ASTM E84 · Surface burning

Flame spread and smoke development; exterior panels are typically specified Class A.

AAMA 2605 · Coating performance

The highest architectural coating standard (70% PVDF resin), including 10 years of South Florida exposure testing for color and gloss retention.

ASTM E330 · Wind load

Panels, fixings and sub-framing are designed and tested for the project's wind pressures, including corner zones.

Miami-Dade NOA / FL Product Approval

Approved wall-cladding systems for permitting in the HVHZ (Miami-Dade and Broward) and the rest of Florida.

AAMA 508 / 509 · Rainscreen

Test standards for pressure-equalized and drained, back-ventilated rainscreen cladding.

Code references are summarized for orientation. Final requirements are confirmed by the engineer of record and the building department for each project.

For architects & designers

Design considerations

What our engineering team reviews with the design team before the drawings are final.

  1. Select the fire gradeFire-retardant grades are used on taller buildings, in an assembly that meets NFPA 285 where required.
  2. Respect the movementHPL moves with humidity. Fixing patterns, edge distances and joint widths follow the manufacturer's rules.
  3. Plan the layoutPanel sizes are planned around standard sheet sizes to reduce waste and keep joints aligned with windows.
  4. Color stabilityDecors are chosen from the manufacturer's exterior range with a color-stability warranty.

Questions

Ventilated HPL Facade: FAQ

Does HPL fade in the Florida sun?

Exterior-grade HPL has a UV-resistant surface designed for outdoor use. Color stability is covered by the manufacturer's warranty for the chosen decor.

Is HPL allowed on taller buildings?

Yes, using fire-retardant grades in an assembly that meets the code, including NFPA 285 where required. We confirm this in design.

Why ventilate HPL cladding?

The ventilated cavity dries any moisture behind the panels and reduces heat build-up, which protects the wall and keeps panels stable.

How thick should exterior HPL be?

Typically 6, 8 or 10 mm, chosen by panel size, fixing spacing and wind load.
